Chiffon, crepe or satin: choosing the fabric of a modest dress

The same long-sleeved maxi dress behaves very differently in chiffon, crepe or satin. How each one drapes, when to wear it and how to care for it.

Two maxi dresses can share a pattern and still look and feel nothing alike, because of the cloth. Most of our dresses and abayas are made in chiffon, crepe or satin. Here is what each one does, so you can choose by how you want a piece to move and when you will wear it.

Chiffon: light and floating

Chiffon is a lightweight weave with a soft, floating drape. It moves with every step, which is why it suits full skirts, flared sleeves and printed dresses. Because it is so light, it is comfortable in warm weather. Shop chiffon maxi dresses and chiffon hijabs.

Care: hand wash cold with a mild detergent or dry clean, do not tumble dry, and steam or iron on the lowest setting.

Crepe: matte and fluid

Crepe has a matte, finely textured surface and a fluid drape. It hangs in clean lines, so it is the natural choice for everyday abayas and dresses that should look composed all day. Shop crepe dresses and abayas.

Care: machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, inside out, and hang to dry. A cool iron is enough if it needs one.

Satin: smooth with a soft sheen

Satin is a smooth weave with a soft sheen and a liquid drape. It catches the light, which makes it right for evenings, weddings and Eid. Shop satin dresses and abayas and the evening edit.

Care: hand wash cold or dry clean, do not wring, and iron on the reverse at a low temperature.

Linen, for warm days

Linen is a breathable natural fibre with a dry, textured hand. It creases, and that is part of its character; it also softens with every wash. Shop linen dresses and abayas.

How to choose

  • For every day: crepe, for its clean lines and easy care
  • For warm weather: chiffon or linen
  • For an occasion: satin, or a chiffon dress with a print
  • For travel: crepe, which packs well

The fabric of every piece, and how to care for it, is listed on its product page under Fabric and care.
